Accessible Information Standard

All organisations that provide NHS or adult social care must follow the accessible information standard by law by 31st July 2016.

The aim of the accessible information standard is to ensure that anyone who has a disability, impairment or sensory loss has access to information which is easy to understand, also that they have communication support available to them should they require it.

As part of the accessible information standard, organisations must do five things:

  • Ask people if they have any information or communication needs and find out how to meet those needs.
  • Record those needs clearly in a set way.
  • Highlight or flag the persons file or notes so it is clear that they have information or communication needs and how to meet those needs.
  • Share information about patients communication needs with other providers of NHS and Social care when given consent by the patient/carer to do so.
  • Ensure people receive information that they can access and understand.

If you, or the person you are caring for, needs information sent out in an alternative format (e.g. large print/braille/easy read) or if you need help with communication, please let us know so that we can update your records.
